Copywriting is the art and science of choosing the best possible words for a particular situation.  In that respect, it is very similar to poetry. I've been writing persuasive literature, poetry, songs, essays, and marketing copy for most of my life.

I have a very strong belief in the harmony of words. As a musician and songwriter, I know all about harmony. When you get a musical chord just right, you know it. It resonates and shimmers and has the power to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and even incite change. A chord can be tonal or it can be dissonant—and in some situations, it can be both at the same time.

In the same way, words can resonate with the reader or they can be uncomfortably dissonant. Just as people believe their own ears before they believe other people's words about what music is supposed to be and sound like, readers believe their own eyes first and formost. Readers trust their own instincts when they read marketing copy, and they can smell a sales pitch a mile away.
