i. the RIVER road leads into the valley of the SHADOW
🌊
The River is rising. I peer down the path where it bends into leaf-shadow. One more bend and we should be there. נהר I can see butterflies cavorting in streams of light, flirting with an unusual tree. An Oak, I should think; an old one. Bent and gnarled, limbs set with the strength of pain and endurance and time; spirally arranged leaves with lobate margins, spears of small golden flowers, and clusters of acorns. There's something odd about it, though, that I can't quite place. נהר I glance back, see where I have come. It has been a time, three times, and half a time. In the distance, a wolf howls, its crystal-clear voice shattering the forest silence. The night falls swiftly. When I finally look ahead again, the path is more shadowed than before. נהר Well, neighbor. It seems to me that we have a decision to make. Do we follow the River road? Do we dare not to dare? נהר

from the PREFACE by Jason Christopher Hackwith
Poetry is a bright light, illuminating the farthest, most desolate reaches of the soul. Poetry is darker than midnight; a useful mask, opaque and forbidding. I love the dichotomy of poetry, the paradox of it: day and night and shades of twilight rolled up into one. It’s easy to hide the heart behind colorful metaphors and well-turned phrases—even as you disclose the deepest depths of your heart to the world.
Poetry has been such a hiding place for me in the darkest times of my life, and the brightest. The strange pulling of a blank page yearning to be filled, the catharsis of the release of emotions; the indescribable feeling when you read and reread the finished poem and feel the truth captured there, fluttering like a caged bird. It always seems to me as if I am a minor part of the process. I’m just moving the pen.
Follow me on this journey I’m on to the river BEAUTIFUL. Created, I create as I walk along the road. #riverbeautiful

“The love of God is a great and powerful River of life, filled not only with every tear that has ever been cried, but also His great tears of infinite, ineffable compassion. I name it Beautiful. The river Beautiful is terrible in its awesome, relentless tenderness. It is indescribably, painfully, heart-stoppingly beautiful; a relentless, reckless, raging storm of love. It is so wide I can never cross over, so deep I could never touch the bottom. Inexorable and irresistable, the love of God upholds aand uplifts every relationship and saturates every part of my life. The River is there in the darkness and in the light; in the joy and in the pain. I am carried along and lifted up, tossed about—and forever changed.”

“Ecclesiastes names thee Almighty, the Maccabees name thee Creator, the Epistle to the Ephesians names thee Liberty, Baruch names thee Immensity, the Psalms name thee Wisdom and Truth, John names thee Light, the Book of Kings names thee Lord, Exodus names thee Providence, Leviticus Sanctity, Esdras Justice, creation names thee God, man names thee Father; but Solomon names thee Compassion, which is the most beautiful of all thy names.”
